This painting grew out of a speech I heard from a man who was researching the history of slavery in America from the 1600s on. He sat at my table before his speech and upon learning I was an artist, wondered what I would see during his talk. So, I paid attention. This is what I saw.

Before my switch to abstract expressionism, I spent about thirty years mastering watercolors. Watercolor painting is not easy. There is not much room for "mistakes" if you are into realistic or representational painting. I would plan out in my head the steps I would take to get to where I wanted to be. After my diagnosis of RA, I switched to acrylics (see my bio) where I could still get the transparent layering of watercolors but could also paint with opaques. There is a great beauty in watercolors, though, where the light of the white surface shines through the transparent layers. It still influences how I paint with acrylics.
