I see colors when listening to music, especially orchestral and choral music. In partnership with Conductor Brian Schmidt of the South Dakota Chorale, I visually interpreted Arvo Part’s Magnificat & Sieben Antiphonen as well as his Nunc Dimittis.

When listening to music as a meditation with friends, I asked them, when we opened our eyes, "What did you see?" I looked around at blank faces. "You didn't see stuff?" I asked. That's when I figured out that I might have something unique going on. I see color and movement, sometimes texture, when listening to music. Certain notes and chords bring forth a certain color(s) in my mind. When interpreting music with paint, I close my eyes and listen, paying attention to the colors I see as the music progresses. If there are lyrics, that also influences where I go in my abstract expressionism. I have now had five collaborations/commissions interpreting the music of Bach, Grieg, Pårt and Buxtehude.
