From Dr. Mahr: "My Symphony No.1, commissioned by a consortium of 54 ensembles and premiered in 2016, is comprised of four movements. The first grew from pondering the challenge our nation and world have to come together rather than grow apart; the second is an acknowledgement of the need to focus on work that truly needs to be done; the third is a reverent appreciation of the love, respect, and joy to be found in others; and the last embodies hope, finding light within the darkness."
When interpreting a piece of music with paint, I close my eyes and listen to it many times, paying attention to the colors, movement and textures it evokes. During the painting process, I play the music repeatedly, letting it inform my choices as I build layers. As I worked on "E Pluribus Unum", I started to see the many paths of the people of this nation, all colors, creeds and stories, making our way to a better life, our hopes and dreams holding us together. We are all intertwined, traveling toward a more perfect union, each with our own individual gifts and perspectives, weaving a colorful tapestry that sustains all of us.
