Today's painting was inspired by new tulips that have seemingly, suddenly, sprouted out of the earth. It seems particularly miraculous considering we had about 8" of snow about a week ago. When I took pictures of my tulips this morning in preparation for this painting, I was again struck by the contrast of the old, dried up leaves and stalks through which the tulips fought their way to the sun. You see, I am not very good about cleaning up my flower beds, preparing them before the snow falls. And I am not good about cleaning up my flower beds in the spring. And so, I am more strongly aware of the miracle of these tall green stalks and leaves that have come out of a buried flower bulb, sleeping under the dirt. I am reminded that out of death, new life is created.
I am blown away by the color of these flowers, the variety, the intricacy. This weekend at my extended family's Mother's Day gathering, the center piece was a spectacular orchid. Wow! Have you ever taken a few minutes to really look at one? They are a work of art! We take flowers for granted sometimes, because we are so used to having them around, forgetting what an beautiful gift they are. So today's painting are my tulips...the harbingers of the end of a long, cold winter. The heralds of spring! I am thankful!
