Today's painting is one of a five-painting commission from Crossview Lutheran Church in Edina, MN. They have an annual juried art show in April that brings in very intriguing and thought-provoking pieces of art that wrestle with our relationship to the Creator and each other. I am one of six artists asked to interpret parts of the narrative of the Old and New Testaments over this school year. The painting above is inspired by the story of John the Baptist who lived in the wilderness "eating locusts and honey". An earthy guy who didn't really take to the status quo. He speaks of the one to come who baptizes with water and the Spirit. I am not sure if he really understood how Jesus was going to shake things up...but I believe he would have approved of the message of Jesus, who shook up the status quo, turned upside down the belief systems of the day. I often wonder what Jesus would turn upside down in our belief system, our status quo....food for thought...
