Today's painting is an illustration commissioned by a church who is following The Story, a book of 31 chapters telling the narrative of the Old and New Testaments. They have invited 6 artists who participated in their annual juried art show to create 5 interpretations of various chapters. The first illustration I did was about the story of Ruth and Naomi (you can see this under the Painting-A-Day Purchase tab, November 4, 2013). This painting is called The Beginning of the End. It is about the twelve tribes of the Jewish people. At this point in history, the 10 northern tribes of Israel are conquered by the Assyrians and the two southern tribes of Judah remain free and are led by King Hezekiah, who seeks the wisdom and prayers of the prophet Isaiah. I couldn't help thinking about the turmoil that is currently happening in the Middle East, especially Syria. In this painting I have symbols of the 10 tribes of Israel, the two tribes of Judah, the prophet Isaiah, the prediction of the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and the color of life and hope. Can you find them? This kind of painting is very, very challenging. To make everything work together...balance, color, symbols, texture....feels good to accomplish the feel I wanted! Yes!
