Painting-A-Day: Feb. 9, 2013

Picture

Feb. 9, '13, Acrylic on Gessobord (1-1/2" birch sides) 12" x 12" Ready-to-Hang

This painting is the last in a series of three concentrating on the use of black & white  as a framing technique with 2-3 other colors taking center stage. It has been so valuable to get immediate feedback from people with these daily posts. I normally work in a vacuum (so to speak) in my studio and usually don't have feedback until I have a show or exhibit. I take all of your voices into account. Yes, it is my voice but what is my voice if it doesn't touch others? If a piece of art fell in the forest and no one was there to see it...would anyone notice? Okay, some squirrels, perhaps...but do they truly appreciate what they are seeing? On another note...the last several days I have been listening to 17th century music by Buxtehude, a German Lutheran composer, in preparation to paint seven large paintings to accompany a choral concert at Duke University in North Carolina. This is a collaboration with conductor Dr. Brian Schmidt, a former member of my congregation in New Ulm. The paintings will be scanned and projected on a large screen behind or alongside the choir. The piece is "Membra Jesu Nostri - The Limbs of our Jesus". The full Latin title translates to "The most holy limbs of our suffering Jesus." According to wikipedia, this work is known as the first Lutheran oratorio. The words are attributed to Medieval poet Arnult of Louvain in the 1100's. It is divided into seven parts, each addressed to the different part of Christ's crucified body: feet, knees, hands, side, breast, heart and head. The instrumental accompaniment will be replicas of the original instruments used. All of this paired with my contemporary abstract paintings. I am soaking up the music, listening for color, movement and translation into the visual. The concert is April 21st. Time to jump in!
(I made changes to this painting and have now posted it on the Feb. 10 blogpost.)

I would love to see your pieces for the Duke University choral concert when you are finished with them. I wish I could attend the concert. I imagine it will be a moving experience.

I'm enjoying your daily paintings. It amazes me that you can create such beauty in a day!

Thanks again for sharing them with us.
