O Magnum Mysterium was recently chosen by the National Lutheran Choir for their Christmas Concert Program at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. My husband and I were invited to attend. The day before I had just found out that I have breast cancer. It's still hard to say those words. I am, however, one of the lucky ones. It was caught early, it was small and they do not recommend chemotherapy. I will be starting radiation therapy on Tuesday for four weeks and will have hormone therapy for five years after. Life can change in an instant, but there is a Constant that holds us up through our suffering and our joy.
Director Cherwain added the song O Magnum Mysterium by Lauridsen after choosing this painting for the cover. It is an incredibly beautiful song. O Great Mystery! I let that Mysterious Love wash over me as I sat in that beautiful space listening to this song. There are few things more moving than a chorus of human voices. The beauty of it was a healing balm for my soul that evening, that I've carried with me.
