New Things Are In the Air!

Last December, I received a fiscal year 2021 Creative Support for Individuals Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

My project is to create art videos for beginners and those who have never painted, with the intention of keeping it affordable to the underserved or those who have suffered economic challenge because of the pandemic, who need a vehicle to help them through this pandemic.

The video project will be called "Beyond Color: Using Paint for Healing and Growth". I will keep you posted!

"Finding Peace"
12 x 12" Acrylic on Gessobord
3/4" Birch Sides
Wired to hang
$165

As I watched the breach of the US Capitol this afternoon, I looked at this painting and thought, ahhhh, that's what I need to calm my soul. That and a video of my 6-month-old grandson smiling. Beauty = food for the soul. We see it in nature, in the faces of those we love, in kindness and mercy, in music, the carefully crafted words of a poem, a story that points to the Good in this world, and in art. O, I am thirsty for beauty these days. May you find some beauty in your day!

This painting is normally priced at $250, but because of the pandemic, I will be selling it for $165. This includes shipping & handling. If interested in purchasing, you can find it on Etsy.com. Just plug in my name, Robyn Sand Anderson.

"Relentless Light"
Acrylic on Gessobord with 1.5" Birch Sides
14" x 11"
Wired to hang.
$325.00 (S&H included)

My paintings tend to have a sense of light breaking in to chaos or darkness or pain, more often than not. After a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis 13 years ago, my paintings changed from realistic watercolors to abstract expressionist acrylics. RA for me meant years of unyielding pain. I turned to brilliant creamy acrylics. Painting in abstraction allowed me to express the little threads of Hope and Light that held me up through that period. It reminded me that Light somehow pushes through the hard stuff we experience. Hope, though sometimes a thin thread, is strong and relentless. I held on to that thread and it led me to a new place. It didn't only lead, it accompanied me, walked with me, picked me up. As you wade through these days of political upheaval and a once-in-a-century pandemic, look for those moments of Light, look for those sometimes small threads of Hope. They are strong and will sustain you.

This painting is normally priced at $385, but because of the pandemic, I will be selling it for $325. This includes shipping & handling. If interested in purchasing, you can find it on Etsy.com. Just plug in my name, Robyn Sand Anderson. This painting as SOLD.

Stay tuned. I will be publishing all of the 12x12" paintings I have on hand later today. My 12 x 12" paintings are normally priced at $250, but because of the pandemic, I will be selling them for $165.00. This includes shipping & handling.

Snow Blanket
12 x 12" Acrylic on Canvas
Wired to hang.
$165.00

Could I actually be yearning for snow? Yes, yes I can. It's the beauty of it, especially the first snow...before there are any footprints, or tire tracks or shovel marks. It's the white contrast with  black-branched trees, golden grasses peeking through, boulders huddled like buffalo. It gives a sense of peace and calm, it slows us down. My husband, who grew up on a farm, has a different relationship with snow which is a bit less romantic. That's okay. Now he gets the romantic version, the one that reminds us of the beauty that surrounds us, a solace to our souls in this turbulent time.
My 12 x 12" paintings are normally priced at $250, but because of the pandemic, I will be selling them for $165.00. This includes shipping & handling. If interested in purchasing, you can find them on Etsy.com. Just plug in my name, Robyn Sand Anderson.  SOLD

"Let Music Rise Up Like Incense"
12 x 12 x 3/4"
Acrylic on Gessobord with Birch Sides
Ready to hang.
$165.00

I have found a niche that speaks to my heart. Combining the art of painting with music can strengthen the power of both. Not just listening to it while painting, but interpreting specific pieces of music. I started to notice that I saw color and movement, sometimes textures when listening to the Christmas at Luther concerts my children were a part of. In 2009, I was lucky enough to be asked to design the backdrop on the theme "Joy to the World". That was the beginning. Since then I have interpreted Buxtehude's "Membra Jesu Nostri", Pårt's "Magnificat & Sieben Antiphonen" and ten of Edvard Grieg's compositions among others. I am often struck by the beauty of the the human voice raised together in song; of the strings, brass and wind instruments that hold up those voices. The experience becomes a prayer for me. This painting started out with a sense of the holy and its presence in color and light. I have been playing with stencils lately, layering them in my work. I layered this treble and bass clef stencil. I felt it a perfect way to show the power and holiness that music can bring to our everyday lives. There's a song we sing in the liturgy of the Lutheran church that keeps going through my mind as I look at this painting. You can hear it here: https://vimeo.com/38678334

"Murmuration"
12 x 12 x 3/4"
Acrylic on Gessobord with Birch Sides
Ready to hang.
$165.00 SOLD

Have you ever experienced a murmuration? Defined as  the phenomenon that results when hundreds, sometimes thousands, of starlings fly in swooping, intricately coordinated patterns through the sky. "Grouping together offers safety in numbers – predators such as peregrine falcons find it hard to target one bird in the middle of a hypnotizing flock of thousands. They also gather to keep warm at night and to exchange information, such as good feeding areas."
Human beings are not made to be isolated. We need each other, we need physical closeness, we need interaction. Living through this pandemic has required great sacrifice. We are being asked to do that which is not natural to us or desired...to physically separate ourselves from our neighbors, our friends, our families. So why do we do it? We do it to help our medical people who are overwhelmed right now with predictions of exponential increase in numbers to come before vaccines can be distributed. We do it for our neighbors, friends and family because we do not know who will be susceptible to a bad reaction to the virus. These birds have to be aware of who is on each side, above, below and in front, moving as needed to protect their neighbor. It is a beautiful thing to watch.

"Calm Seas in Waning Light"
12 x 12 x 1-1/4"
Acrylic on Canvas with Black Sides
Ready to hang
$165.00 SOLD

I needed something calming. I needed to bathe in pure color. I know, weird, huh? That's how I feel about color sometimes. I find it oddly soothing and am convinced it helped in my healing after a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis in 2008. I'm sure it has more to do with endorphins and we all have to find  our own way to increase our endorphin levels. For me it's color. I follow Connie Schultz on Twitter, a Pulitzer Prize winning author and journalist, who is also married to Senator Sherrod Brown. Through this pandemic and election year, she will often post pictures of everyday life and remind us to breathe. Breathe. Stop throughout your day and take four deep belly expanding breaths and let the air out through pursed lips. That and look at this painting. Hopefully it will remind you to breathe.

My 12 x 12" paintings are normally priced at $250, but because of the pandemic, I will be selling them for $165.00. This includes shipping & handling. If interested in purchasing, you can find them on Etsy.com. Just plug in my name, Robyn Sand Anderson.

Time Speaks
12 x 12 x 1.25"
Acrylic on Canvas
$165 (S&H included)

Turn this painting 90 degrees counter-clockwise. That's how I painted it. Then, I accidentally turned it on its side and thought...hmmm, I think I like it better this way. That is one of the beautiful things about abstract paintings. It can speak in more than one way. You may like it better the other way. For some reason this spoke to me as an expression of the passing of time. There are concrete parts  of our lives but also murky, soft-edged happenings that are not defined or understood. Time marches on, in spite of us. We learn new things, we understand more things, more things become clear...if we listen, if we open our eyes, if we keep striving to learn, if we keep talking to each other. That's what I thought of while working on this painting. What do you see?

My 12 x 12" paintings are normally priced at $250, but because of the pandemic, I will be selling them for $165.00. This includes shipping & handling.

Prairie Grasses
Acrylic on Canvas
12" x 12" x 1.25"
Black Sides, Ready to hang.
$165.00 (includes S&H) SOLD

One of the ways my husband and I have survived the isolation of this pandemic is to find new places to walk or hike near us. We have found parks we never knew existed and some places of singular beauty. This painting was inspired by one of our places, a path through prairie grasses. I take many pictures with my phone. Jon tries to be patient with this hobby. Somehow taking time to capture it seals the beauty into my mind. I can revisit it. I am fascinated with what this practice has done to heal my soul during this time of national upheaval. I carry a feeling of deep sorrow for the 275,000 deaths and those affected personally by it, for the weight of caring for these people by our medical personnel. The world feels heavy. And so, while we do what we can not to add to the burden, we must look for things that hold us up.

I had a period of deep suffering from illness. What it does is whittle away the things that don't matter. I have grown to realize that this was a gift. What I am left with, what really matters, are my relationships. What I am left with, what really matters, is the beauty we find in nature, in the arts, in the faces of those we love. What I am left with, what really matters, are the examples of kindness and selfless love shown to others. These are the things that hold me up. These are the things that connect all of us.

My 12 x 12" paintings are normally priced at $250, but because of the pandemic, I will be selling them for $165.00. This includes shipping & handling. This painting has SOLD.

"First Snow"
Acrylic on Gessobord with 3/4" Birch Sides
12 x 12"
Ready to hang. SOLD

It's been a while but I'm back! Life happens and life is really happening right now. We are in a full blown pandemic and entering the worst of it. Our country is in turmoil and at odds with each other. I have stayed engaged and worked to get out the vote. But it is heavy business and figuring out how to navigate this pandemic and our current political climate requires us to find ways to keep our heads up. For me, it has been getting outdoors for hikes and taking pictures of the beauty I find. I've also occupied my brain with writing a novel this past year. I am a hair's width away from a rough draft. Kurt Vonnegut quoted an archaeologist he met on a dig who said, "I don't think being good at things is the point of doing them. I think you've got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them."I didn't know I could do it, but with some help from Writer's Write Mia Joubert Botha, I did. You don't know what you can do until you let yourself go and give it a try. Creating something is a healing experience, whether it is making a spectacular tater tot hot dish, cutting wood and stacking it beautifully, or playing with paint. I lost two big painting gigs this last summer and so haven't painted much, but I need it now and am starting back in with my Painting-A-Day project which is now more truthfully, a Painting-A-Week project. I will be painting small paintings, usually 12 x 12" but may do some 8 x 8" triptychs. I will be experimenting with colors, textures and movement and eventually hope to figure out how to create instructional and guided painting videos. It's good to figure out some ways to be creative. It fills those empty spaces in our souls right now. Get a pad of watercolor paper, a paintbox and brush and just play with color. It doesn't have to "be" anything...it is about the journey, people. It's good to be back.

My 12 x 12" paintings are normally priced at $250, but because of the pandemic, I will be selling them for $165.00. This includes tax and shipping & handling.

"Force of Nature"
12 x 12" Acrylic on Gessobord with 3/4" Birch Sides, Ready to hang!
$165.00 (includes S&H) SOLD

Occasionally you hear of someone described as "a force of nature." Usually this is said as an affirmation, like there is no holding back with this person. There is an implied respect at their energy and strength. Can't say I've ever been called that, but I have been thinking about forces of nature as I worked on this painting (the one I posted a few days ago of the textured white surface, awaiting some color.) We have all seen examples of forces of nature, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes and wildfires. We stand in awe at the energy and strength behind these relentless
forces where we find both beauty and fear. It reminds us that there are bigger forces at work than our human machinations. I find this notion to be good to remember and I find myself looking to this Force of Nature for solace, for beauty and for hope.

My 12 x 12" paintings are normally priced at $250, but because of the pandemic, I will be selling them for $165.00. This includes shipping & handling. If interested in purchasing, go to the More tab above and click on Painting-A-Week Purchase, then click on the Etsy logo. This painting has SOLD.

"Sarabande"
An interpretation of Edvard Grieg's
Holberg Suite: Sarabande
24" x 18"

This painting is one of five interpreting Grieg's Holberg Suite. The music Grieg created evokes images of water, both waterfalls and still waters. All five of them are now under the Interpreting Music with Color tab, "That's Grieg!" along with the music that inspired them. Click on the music and listen while viewing the paintings. I received an arts grant from Southwest Minnesota Arts Council & The Mcknight Foundation. to travel to Bergen, Norway last year to study Grieg's life, music and the environment that "colored" his music. This painting was inspired by the music and my ancestors in Sand, Norway. Enjoy!
