Acrylic on Archival Gessobord with 3/4" Birch Sides, 12x12", Ready to hang!

Having a painting hiatus as I welcome my adult children home. Sweet, sweet time together! In the next few months I will be working on an exhibit that will run from March 15-May 15, 2014. I will post my progress along the way. You will most likely see fewer 12x12" Painting-A-Days. I will do what I am able. Sometimes they are a nice break from more serious themes. Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays everyone! Thanks for following my work!

I love winter because it forces us to slow down. It reminds us to rest, to breathe, to notice the things that make us human. When you stop to notice, you see the miracle that our existence is. I have resurrected this painting, first posted on December 12. I knew I wasn't quite done with it; I might not be done even now. I will give it a few days to breathe. I added some big swatches of red in the upper right quadrant. I felt it was too agitated in that area (see Dec. 12 post). There is enough action going on already, especially with the textured paper added on the surface. We need places in our lives to rest, clearing space in our brains, slowing down, noticing things. My brother wrote recently about his new and first grandchild, how he is relearning to be in the moment and how incredibly sweet that is. Take a few minutes, even if it is only a minute or two and rest your mind. Otherwise life runs by us, too fast. It is snowing here, big flakes. It's beautiful.

I love the image of the dove, a symbol of peace, a symbol of God's Spirit, the breath of God. There is something elegant about it. It's shape has flowing lines suggesting movement. Today I studied the painting first posted on November 25th. I wanted to bring out the shape of a dove diving downward more dramatically. I wanted to emphasize the breath of God blowing through and under and on us. If you take a look at my first posting of this painting you will notice that it was in a color palette resembling nature, yellows, greens, blues and browns. I knew that it would take an "unusual" color to make the shape of the dove pop out...to help you see it as the center of interest. Sometimes I want things to be subtle. Sometimes I want to throw a splash of something that grabs your attention. The addition of this particular red violet does just that. It adds the drama I think this painting needed.

Today I had a blast! I am trying the application of some textured papers that I found at Dick Blick. This one looks more like netting. I love the way it picks up paint on its surface while retaining the color that was painted underneath it, showing between the strands of string. So many interesting things to see in this one. Loved painting it! Can't wait to try more! My blog is short today, because I have to be at the dentist in about 20 minutes and I am still in my painting clothes. Oh, what the heck...it's my uniform...I might just have to wear it there, along with the paint that is all over my hands. A conversation piece, right? There is a close-up of the material I used below, before I painted on it. Not sure if I am done with the above painting. We will see...

Those of you who have been following me for awhile know that I tend to use a lot of movement, a lot of swirling movement. What does this mean? I do not know. I believe that there is movement afoot...the universe is moving "outward" into space. There is an undergirding of connection and movement in all things. In other words, action. I would call this God. You might call it something else. On a certain personality/attribute test one of my highest areas is called Connectness. I tend to think that all things are connected, from the basic elements to the human animal (who are made of basic elements....you see?) This painting was first painted on Dec. 5. I didn't feel like it was finished when I posted it, but you see, I have this deadline. So, I went back in and gave it some pillars to stand on, a frame to help you see all of that action. You know, like when you are crazy busy with details and it just helps to write it down on a piece of paper. A place to land. Same thing. Something solid to stand on.

This painting has been added to...see January 21, 2014 posting.

I labored on this one, and had a feeling of despair I have to admit. I worked on this yesterday and into to the evening because I was not able to paint today. I finally dragged it into the living room to show my husband and set it up across the room. Wow!  I thought. That looks pretty good when you get a little distance from it (as in not right under your chin...) I felt an immediate lift in my spirits. This morning when I looked at it afresh, I only needed to make one little tweak and it felt balanced and right. I am always amazed at how one, sometimes tiny, adjustment can contribute to the success of a painting. It is like making a decision to do something healthy and balanced in your life...food, exercise, rest, whatever it may be. When you do it...it just feels right.

Acrylic on Archival Gessobord with 3/4" Birch Sides, 12x12", Ready to hang!

I needed a large dose of color after a few days of painting winter landscapes. Every abstract is an experiment, a puzzle to be solved. Sometimes I solve it on the first day I paint on this Painting-Day project. Not sure if I am done with this one. Deciding when something is finished, as an artist, may be one of the hardest things we do. It's tough when you have spent hours on a painting and you go two steps too far and lose something wonderful. It has been a real challenge with this project. I try to finish a painting in a day. Most of the time that works. Sometimes I change the painting several times. How do I know when to stop? When I look at it and nothing bothers me. It is true that when I have spent hours on a painting, like today, I need to step away from it for a day or two and look at it fresh. Things jump out at me that I couldn't see after 4 hours of painting. If you especially like this one as is, better grab it (she said, in a gentle tone...) because I may dive in again tomorrow. Happy Friday!

This painting has been altered. See January 21, 2014 posting.

I love the bright white light in this painting! I love the way it breaks into this mass of teeming colors. I have a sense of landscape, rolling hills and bright sunlight cresting over the hilltop, mirroring itself in the bottom of the painting. Perhaps you see something different. That in itself is beautiful. I love that people see different things in a piece of art. Magical. This painting evolved over several months and landed here. It was last featured on October 31st. It is still for sale, tho I wouldn't mind if it stayed with me (should I say that?!) Some of these paintings are hard to part with...but that's the name of the game for an artist who is trying to make an income. Gotta share the love...

I am finding winter landscapes to be fascinating. They tend to be minimalist, which poses a different kind of challenge. Because I am a former watercolorist, using opaque paint is a new world for me. I love the creaminess of the paint, the way it blends together in often unpredictable ways. As my husband will attest, I am persnickety. I prefer to call myself a "detailist". (I just made that up.) While assisting him in hanging Christmas lights along the eaves at the front of our house, and by that I mean pointing and commenting, it really bothered me that some of it was bunched up in one area. He said, be careful on the ladder when you take care of that later. I had to laugh. So true! I had to fix it. I told him that is the same trait that keeps me at a painting when something doesn't look right or feel right, as in...that is how I am made, buster! So if you removed each layer of the sky, you would find many layers. The sky changed many times today. I wanted to emphasize the heaviness of winter skies. I am happy with the result. No need for a ladder.
