The beginnings...a new 24x24" painting!

I am back in the studio today, starting a new painting. It is always a feeling of anticipation and excitement to see where this one will lead me. People continue to visit my exhibit at The Grand Center for Arts & Culture in New Ulm (open through October 31) and sales steadily come in.  It's a sweet gallery space!

O Magnum Mysterium
Acrylic on Canvas, 48" x 72",  $2500

The aftermath of setting up a show and having an opening is full of conflicting emotions and introspection. It's an odd thing to spend the majority of your days turned inward and then turn around and display your "innards" to the public. You hang up your work with hope and an incredible feeling of vulnerability. You hope that someone will fall in love with a painting and absolutely have to have it in their house or office. The need to pay for the supplies and make a living is thrown in there for good measure or, just to mess with your head.

It was a lovely reception with a steady stream of visitors and feedback, which I really appreciate. I said a brief spiel regarding my work and my artistic journey and handed it over to Anne Makepeace who spoke for The Grand Center for Arts & Culture. They are doing wonderful things with a renovated historic hotel in New Ulm, creating a cultural arts center. This town really promotes the arts, and for that I am very thankful! The tough balance for me is whether to follow my heart and my own searching in my paintings or create paintings that might fit in your living room. I would say this exhibit has both and both are needed.

I always goes into a show with hopes of selling many, but realize there are many factors at play. I had many great comments, but only one sale on opening night. Try as I might, I  find myself feeling a bit low about that, in moments, questioning my entire vocation. I understand that buying a piece of original art is a huge decision. I don't take that lightly. I, myself, would be one of those people who can only afford to compliment. So I empathize. Still I can't help but hope.

I could use a lesson in patience.  The purpose of this blog is to let you into the life and mind of an artist. So, here it is in all its glory. Hope, self-doubt, joy, despair. Just like life, I guess. I will be taking a small break to refresh my heart and soul. In the meantime, I will post the paintings from the show under the Acrylics tab at the top of the page. In the pull-down menu, hit "Enigmata". I will post a video of my Gallery Talk as well, hopefully by the end of the evening.

A big thank you to the Prairie Lakes Regional Art Council and the McKnight Foundation for the Fellowship Grant that allowed me to study with Jan Sitts and helped to pay for supplies, advertising and fees for this exhibition.

Acrylic on Archival Gessobord with 3/4" Birch Sides, 12x12", Ready to hang!

Do you ever find yourself staring at tree branches?  The interplay of branches and twigs finally all run together, intertwined. I love looking at the patterns against the sky when I go for a walk. It's especially beautiful during "the Golden Hour" when the sun hits the leaves and the edges of the branches with gold. Today I've played with gesso on my gessobord, adding a dimension of depth. I didn't know I was going to paint trees until I was 3 or 4 colors deep and I started to see trees. I may be done with this one. Maybe you think so. We will see.

A Cropped Image of Today's Painting

Here's a cropped area of the 12x12" painting I am working on today. I'd say I'm well on my way, but definitely not finished. I will hopefully be posting it in the next day or two.

Acrylic on Archival Gessobord with 3/4" Birch Sides, 11x14", Ready to hang!

Today's painting begins with black after texturing with a gel medium first. I have always loved deep grays and blacks against gold. You know those days when a thunderstorm is rolling in and the sky is heavy gray with impending rain. Behind you the sun is still shining on the gold fields of grain that jut up against the sky. The contrast is so dramatic. And beautiful.

Cropped picture of acrylic painting on canvas.

There are days when I wake up and know I am going to be "on" with a painting. Other days are kind of cloudy. On those days I paint, but sometimes things don't go so well and I am not surprised. Today I felt "on" and I was. I had ideas. I went to sleep last night going over my painting in my head and told my brain to work on it during the night. Hmmm. Guess it worked. At least it feels like I made some real progress today. This is a cropped piece of the 4 x 6' painting I am working on. I don't want to post the whole thing until I am sure I am done. On we go.

Cropping of 40x30" Acrylic on Gessobord with 2" Birch Sides

Today I am working on "tightening up" elements of design on the paintings I will include in my upcoming exhibit "Enigmata" at The Grand Center for the Arts in New Ulm, running September 19-Oct. 31. This is a cropped piece from a painting that has been hanging in my living room where I can stare at it often. It occurred to me that perhaps it is too busy with movement and color, something I tend to do in paintings. What I need to remember, in life and in painting, is that very often less is more. So I am working with that concept today as I march from painting to painting. It is an interesting feeling as the show approaches. I always feel very vulnerable, and somewhat exposed. But this is the nature of being an artist and trying to make a living at it. We are often very introverted people, who live mostly alone creating our art. Yet, it is important for people to experience art, to think and to feel. And so we share our innards, so to speak. Eventually I will put together the pieces for this show and have them on my website.
