Acrylic on Archival Gessobord with 3/4" Birch Sides, 12x12", Ready to hang!

Today I played with white gesso creating a grid of raised paint. Beginning with several greens, I ended with highlights of magenta and deep shadows of violet and teal. After battling my computer for a good hour, I was finally able to get this painting posted. Some days are just a struggle. First world problem, I know. In the end, I feel good about this one. A nice respite from the rigors of the large painting I've been working on. It's weird to spend hours and hours on something, knowing that it may just not work. Yet I am compelled to keep at the big boy, as I am now calling him (see August 14 post).

I am in labor today. Trying to birth a 4' x 6' abstract painting. Oh, yes, it seems easy at first, like breathing. Great big strokes of paint using the movement of my whole arm across the canvas. But I've entered the lumbering, heavy gaited stage, where making decisions either comes with small bursts of confidence or makes me want to curl up into a fetal ball. It is both frightening and exhilarating. When I need to take a breath, I work on a couple  smaller paintings I am preparing for my next exhibit here in New Ulm. You are invited! These paintings are part of the grant I received from the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council (PLRAC) and the McKnight Foundation. I studied with Jan Sitts in Sedona, AZ last May and am using some of the new techniques I learned there, in my work.

Hope you can make it! The opening reception is September 19 from 7:00-9:00pm There are many fun things to do in and around New Ulm, MN.

I am officially in love with gel medium, of any sort. It helped create the lovely "under" texture of this painting across the top third and down through the center. I started with a magenta wash with a yellow-orange on top. The ridges created by the gel medium grabs some paint and leaves the first paint on the flat areas. Why does this thrill me so much? I don't know, but there you have it! I suppose it is the interplay of light and color. Who wouldn't be thrilled with that?! I chose cobalt blue next, finishing with raw umber, a cool brown. This was a fun one! (The upper corners are more of a true white, than a cream white).

Layer upon layers. The earth builds itself out with layers of rock, stone, water and vegetation. Today's painting made me think of the layers upon layers we build around ourselves without thought of what we are burying. Sometimes we need to protect our selves, to insulate against the storms of life. But, what consequence then...when things begin to tumble and break apart. Peeling back the layers, one by one can be a freeing experience. Hard work, scary sometimes, but opening up these layers to the sun and letting them go can give a peace beyond understanding.

Close-ups

Today I am featuring some close-ups of the painting I posted on August 14th...a work in progress. I added some art tissue paper in various places and am now working on adding color on top of those areas. The trick is in how to use color to lead the viewer's eye around the painting while maintaining a cohesive unity. The danger is getting lost in those lovely details while not keeping an eye on the big picture. Oh, how that happens to the human species over and over again, right? More later.

How does an artist simplify an idea, abstracting it? As we continually purge ourselves of the furniture we've accumulated, the three-season porch windows reveal more and more of our back yard. I sat there the other day, coffee in hand,  contemplating the universe, when I noticed  the dance of dappled light sparkling from one leaf to another. Our drought took a breather and the rain sitting on the leaves looked like diamonds as the wind bandied them about. Today I played with the idea of the dappled light that fills the empty spaces between leaves and trunks and branches. You will notice I've also changed from my usual 12x12" format to an 11 x 14" size.

This painting is "in progress".
Acrylic on Canvas, 4 x 6'.

I've been working on this big boy today. It is a whole new ball game working so large. Challenging, but I am loving it! I've heard authors say they don't know where their characters will lead them, and that is how I feel about this one. You can see its beginning on the July 31st post. If I have time today, I will add a slide show of its progress to this post. Stay tuned.

Today's painting is about how life is defined and not defined, how we want all the answers yet can't have them. It is about reality and its shadow that speak of mystery. We yearn to know, yet in knowing we protest.

Creative problem solving aside...it's hard to paint when the water is turned off. Our water heater went kaputt today. I forgot I might need to replenish my bucket with clean water before they turned it off and so, have a few more things to do to this one to make it work. Clean water will help! Thought I would show you what I have so far. More tomorrow...

Acrylic on Archival Gessobord with 2" Birch Sides, 40" x 30", Ready to hang!

I think it is really difficult for the human mind to not want to make sense of something it sees. And so, abstracts often elude us. I just now said to my son, as I looked at my painting, "I can't quite make sense of this..." It is so hard to look at a painting with your only agenda being that you want to let the play of color wash over you. You want to notice the intricacies of texture and color together. Sometimes I just look at an abstract and let my mind empty. I let it exist for its own sake, without putting my meaning onto it. But then again, sometimes I don't. This painting originally was an attempt to address grief. I worked with multiple colors and circular movement. I then moved to the thought of grief feeling like stones, heavy on your chest. The thought was fine, but the painting wasn't really working. Now I have added many layers of paint and texture. The old painting peeks through in places. Where I might have called the underpainting "Stones" I would call this one "Waves". Grief comes in waves, sometimes with no rhyme or reason. We are swallowed up in darkness and light breaks through to buoy us up. I've ended up liking how this painting evolved, because grieving is hard work. It is messy. It draws us in and spits us out. You slog through it and you grab for the light.
