Almost done...

Music and visual art. One of my favorite combinations! I am so moved by music when I am painting and my paintbrush often mimics the movement of the instruments from soprano to alto to bass, soft and melodic to loud and percussive.  Music adds to the full experience of expressionist art in my humble opinion. Yesterday I told you about a project I started, to contribute to a fundraiser for The Grand Center for the Arts. Here is what I have so far. A few more tweaks and it will be finished and ready for the bidding.

Yes, I am painting a gee-tar!

So, somebody threw me a curve ball. Would it be wrong to say that curve balls are good? Curve balls wake you up? Our local arts center, The Grand Center for the Arts here in New Ulm, is having a fundraising auction and they asked local artists to paint some instruments that are no longer healthy. I chose this guitar. My husband sanded it for me, bless his heart, and I began the process of applying 3 layers of white gesso to it to prepare it to accept paint. I can't wait to start in with color, color and color!! I think I will pick some guitar music to listen to as I paint. Seems appropriate. Tune in tomorrow for a peek at the progress.

Acrylic and Textures on 300# Arches Cold Press Paper, 15 x 11".
(photographed on white paper background)
Can be matted and framed in standard 16x20" frame/mat.
$650.00 plus Shipping and Handling $30.

It is an exciting process! This piece was my first dive into creating multiple applied textures before adding any color. The yellow vertical strip, for instance, is a raised surface. It never gets boring! I love the variety it allows me. This painting actually started as a horizontal but when I finished, I turned it on its side and thought it looked more intriguing. Painting on watercolor paper instead of my usual gessobord gives a more muted look to the paint, as it soaks into the paper. This digital image is a bit more intense in color, especially the orange and red in the lower right corner. That's just what happens in the transfer of the image to photo, and then online. I tweaked it as close as possible to the original.

Acrylic on Archival Gessobord with 3/4" Birch Sides, 12x12", Ready to hang!

Painting $100, S&H $15

I started today's painting with a piece of Masa paper I had painted about four years ago at a previous workshop. I adhered that piece of purple/blue muted paper to begin. This painting includes other applied textures as well as the use of copper iridescent paint in the lower quadrant and repeated as a horizontal line at the top edge of the Masa paper. This paint has a beautiful sheen that contrasts nicely with brilliance of the other pigments. I am having a blast!

Cropping of Acrylic on Watercolor Paper

Today's painting is, again, a cropping from one of the paintings I created in the art workshop I mentioned yesterday. What fun it is to create layers of color and texture, allowing previous layers of color to shine through. Today I created texture on several 12x12's in preparation for paint. I almost finished one today, but am not quite satisfied, so I will post it tomorrow. The croppings from yesterday and today will be posted next week and will be for sale. On to the next!

A Cropping of an Acrylic on Watercolor Paper

I'm back after a wonderful hiatus/week-long art workshop! My trip to Sedona, AZ was a gift from a Fellowship Grant through the PLRAC/McKnight Foundation. I studied with abstract expressionist, Jan Sitts. The title of the workshop was Texture, Color, Feeling. Perfect! I am happy with the techniques and ideas I have come away with from this workshop. Ideas for great brushes, new pigments as well as different ways to create yummy textures.  I am so excited to try some new things, which you will see in my future Painting-A-Day posts. I also plan to do some paintings of varying sizes, as some of you have expressed  interest in larger pieces.  The image above is a cropped portion of a painting I am working on. It is currently in transit from AZ, so I will finish it next week along with several others and will post them soon. Stay tuned and thanks for following my work!

Acrylic on Archival Gessobord with 3/4" Birch Sides, 12x12", Ready to hang!

Today I embrace minimalism...upon the suggestion of my eldest. It was actually challenging, though seemingly simple. I concentrated with the hue of aqua moving into teal, with variances as it moved south. It is divided with a band of iridescent gold. I like the contrast of muted color and shiny gold. It gives me the feeling of peaceful seas, one of my favorite things to think of when I need to clear my mind and bathe in quiet peace. Mmmmm.

Today's painting is a combination of the old and the new. The bottom third is from a previous painting. I wasn't happy with the top...so I painted over it with a warm blue and added distant hills, sky and water. I love the contrast of the textured foreground against the smoothness of the distant hills and sky. I always find it interesting to see new plant life peaking through last year's dead growth. You can't miss what's happening. Sometimes when I hear the warnings about the earth's warming, I look at these seemingly simple things and wonder, will my grandchildren enjoy the same simple pleasures? Will there be enough water? food? shelter? I have to believe there will, because I don't think we collectively will fritter away our resources. That wouldn't make any kind of sense, would it?

Acrylic on Archival Gessobord with 3/4" Birch Sides, 12x12", Ready to hang!

One of the biggest challenges in my life as an artist is finding balance. Balance is crucial in a painting. It doesn't feel right or finished if it is out of balance. Today I drove to a nearby town to look at a bike a guy was selling on Craigslist. It took about 2 hours out of my day, and 2 hours out of the time I use to paint these 12x12's. But, I just happened to look on Craigslist and there it was. The kind of bike I've been looking for, a good brand and a good price. He needed me to come and look at it in the morning. I knew I should be painting because I haven't for several days because of other travels. But I chose to go and now I have a new used bike! I hoped I'd still have time to paint and I was able to get this painting done. It is painted entirely with a palette knife. Fun and fast paced. I love the creaminess of acrylic paint and how they blend with each other as I apply each color. These colors suggest a landscape for me...how about you?  I read an article about Facebook's new changes that only allow a few of you to see this post, though I have 405 people signed up on my Facebook art page now. I read that the word "Congratulations!" brings it to more viewers...so if any of you can work that into a comment, that would be great!

An early morning greeting to the sky after a long winter's nap. I've made a few changes to the top of this painting from yesterday, adding to the sky, a muted blue. I wanted to give you a "worm's eye-view" of the first leaves of spring coming up out of the ground. I am working on a job this weekend, so I will be back painting some new 12x12's next week. Then it is off to Sedona for an art workshop with Jan Sitts. I received an arts grant from Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council to study with her and create an exhibit for next fall at The Grand in New Ulm, MN. I can't wait to learn more about painting abstracts in acrylic!
