Feb. 28, '13 , Acrylic on Gessobord (3/4" birch sides) 12" x 12" Ready-to-Hang

Today I wanted to convey the feeling you have when standing in the woods, when the sun is starting to sink and the shadows deepen. I find the woods to be a place of peace. I can smell the air now, the smell of dirt and leaves decomposing. I always get a sense of timelessness when I look at the trees, who live such long, unassuming lives, doing their silent work of taking in carbon dioxide and breathing out oxygen. Their ancient presence is a good reminder of how fleeting life is...a good reminder of our brief time here. How do we want to spend that time? When our lives increasingly run faster and faster, it is good to create some space to breathe.                                               Now...I should listen to my sage advice!
My cousin Kristy asked for some reflections on how this exercise of a Painting-A-Day has been for me. First, I made it through the month of February! Yes! Second, it has more positives than negatives! Third, I want to keep going with it! It has been a good experience for me. The discipline to paint every day is a healthy one for an artist, not easy, but good. I have learned to be flexible with myself. This is crucial when I have other commissions. But, I find myself drawn to that 12x12" white surface with a sense of excitement...what will it be today? I love the variety. I am learning technique in the process, as I experiment. I love that it is an affordable piece of original art for people to buy. Cheaper, really, than a print that needs to be framed. I appreciate the immediate feedback I receive from viewers. One of my challenges is to spread the word to others who might like to follow my progress...that is where I need your help. Anytime you run across someone you know who is interested in art, I would be thankful to have you share my website www.RobynSandAnderson.com or share my facebook art page,
Robyn Sand Anderson Art. Thanks so much everyone!
That said, this weekend, I will take a break for some family time. Next week I will need to take the whole week to work on the Buxtehude commission. I will keep you updated with the progress of painting #2 and #3. I hate to let go of my daily 12x12 paintings, but I have to in order to fulfill this commission. It is intrigueing, challenging work to interpret 17th century music and 11th century lyrics. But I love it! Talk to you soon!

Once in a while I think, isn't it amazing that we have all of these organs inside our body doing their daily function. This incredible machine that takes in nourishment and "gives away" what we don't need. We breathe in...and out....and our heart pumps blood all throughout our body and up into our brain, a mass of tissue. Incredible...when you stop to think about it, isn't it? I like to pay attention to things we take for granted. This grabbed my attention when all of a sudden everything didn't work the way it was supposed to in my body. My body was fighting itself instead of protecting itself. Then I started thinking about how we protect our SELF, sometimes by putting up walls. Sometimes the walls are necessary for survival, but often we need to open that window and let someone in. It is risky business. That's what I was thinking about today...windows. Opening the window a crack. Taking down the walls.

Feb. 26, '13 , Acrylic on Gessobord (3/4" birch sides) 12" x 12" Ready-to-Hang

Today I am working with cool colors, aqua, blue, violet with touches of warm with the use of dark brown and highlights of moss green. This looked like a bay or inlet of some kind and when I looked at the Feb. 21 painting upside down the other day, I saw what looked like sail boats and this painting begged for sailboats. Ahhh, inspiration! I love sweeping clouds or anything that suggests movement...which is why I am less excited about still life painting. I still am intrigued by color and shape but life suggests passion and movement, I think.

I had so much fun with this style of painting on the 21st that I decided to play with it again. As a watercolorist for almost 30 years, the first steps were reminiscent of the layering I used in a wet-in-wet watercolor painting. You have little control with this technique. It took me many years to learn how to let go, which matches up with how my life has played out. Why is it so difficult to let go, to let yourself float? Beautiful things can happen when you let go of the need to control every aspect of life. But, oh...it is so hard. This painting is a fun blend of watercolor technique where you let the white of the gessobord shine through the transparent layers
and acrylic opaques laid on top, defining the chaos.

Today a day of rest, in the sense that I am not painting. But I am using some quiet space and time to think and dream about my next paintings. I am also using this time to wire up and package the paintings that have sold, to mail on Monday. I need an administrative assistant! These things take time, but believe me, I am not complaining! Thanks to all of you for taking time to view my work and follow my progress as an artist. Knowing that you are checking in on my posts keeps me motivated. Buxtehude Commissioned Project: Ad Latus 36" x 24"

I believe I am finished with the first of seven paintings for this commission. When I say "I believe" that means I am still open to making changes and sometimes when I get to the end of a series of paintings I will make minor tweaks so that the paintings are visually and conceptually connected.  Here are the lyrics for this cantata from the 11th century
 Membra Jesu Nostri
Ad Latus: To the sides
Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come,my dove in the clefts of the rock,
in the hollow of the cliff  (Son of Songs 2:13-14)
Hail, side of the saviour, in which the honey of sweetness is hidden, in which the power of love is exposed, from which gushes the spring of blood that cleans the dirty hearts
Lo I approach you, Pardon, Jesus, if I sin,
With reverent countenance
freely I come to you to behold your wounds,
In the hour of death, may my soul enter, Jesus, your side
Hence dying may it go into you,
Lest the cruel lion seize it, But let it forever remain with you.

On another note...I bought more gessobords. This next batch will have 3/4" birch sides. The
1-1/2" birch sides are backordered. Both are beautiful and I am excited to dive back in. I am taking a day to varnish the sides and prep for new 12x12" paintings. I also need to create some quiet space to envision the next painting for the Buxtehude project. I have the idea. Now I need to close my eyes and see the color and the steps I need to take to accomplish what I see in my mind's eye. I usually jump in with a few general ideas and then let the painting guide me. Here we go!

Feb. 21, '13 , Acrylic on Gessobord (1-1/2" birch sides) 12" x 12" Ready-to-Hang

Sun setting on winter snow. I have always loved the play of shadow on snow and how the white snow picks up the colors of shadow and reflects the sun's setting colors. I know I said this would be "tree week" this week...and I fully intended to add some birch in the foreground. But the shadow colors blending were so beautiful I just couldn't put anything on top of it. And so, if you use your imagination (and I hope you do) the tree line is along the horizon line at the top of the painting...struck gold by setting sun. That's the way I like to think of it. So winter can seem like drudgery and blah, blah, blah colors. But if you go for a walk at "the golden hour"
when the sun is going down...you can push your imagination a bit and see the
colors and shapes of shadow playing on snow. It's lovely.
Well...I have run out of gessobord and my order with Dick Blick has been back-ordered. So I am on a trek to find some that might be hiding in art stores. Consequently, I won't have a new painting for tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Buxtehude Project: Ad Latus Painting

I am taking a break today....from painting. I need to clear my head. Reboot. I get so lost in my paintings that it literally feels like time stands still. It is an odd place to be for hours on end. Pleasant, but sometimes it feels like you have no mooring...like you need to put your foot on the earth to remember that you exist in a physical sense. Like I said, weird. When I have more time for a painting, I often leave it alone for several days while I work on other things. Then I bring it out again and often, it is very clear what I need to do next. I can see what is missing or
what needs to be covered up.

I haven't had the luxury of that kind of reflection with the 12x12" paintings. The Buxtehude Project gives me a little more time to get away from it, but I do feel a time pressure with that project as well, because of the performance aspect of the commission. The concert is April 21st...but I will need to ship them about 2 weeks before that and will need to have them scanned at least a week or two before that. I am now hyperventilating. My husband says I am a peak performer. I do well under pressure. But, he obviously doesn't live inside my head where Edvard Munch's "The Scream" is playing. Somehow it all works out. It always does. I will trust in that!

I love birch trees. What is it about them anyway? I think it is that they contrast so much with the other trees and foliage around them. They shout "Look at me! Look at me!" And so, we do. Today I combined an abstract background with a realistic image on top. Now there's contrast! I love sunsets and the background colors are that for me today. Reds are always difficult to capture with a camera...they just won't be captured. Just like reds to do that....

Buxtehude Project: Ad Latus Painting

A day of rest...well, make that 1/2 a day. I find I really do need to take a break from all this creative problem solving...the right brain does seek rest after all. But, I am close to finished on this painting and it is calling to me to bring it all together. I am sitting on the stoop of the doorway down into my studio (four season porch) staring at my painting. I stare at it quite awhile, several times a day. If you saw me you might think I wasn't working...but, there's a whole lot goin' on up in here (picture me circling my head with my hand). I visualize several different options for these last steps. I am going to use a more opaque pigment (adding white or black to a pigment) for contrast to the bright swirl of colors happening. It helps define where I want the viewer's eye to travel...helps bring out what I consider to be the important parts of the painting. It also gives you a little rest before diving into the more active elements of the painting. This cropped image above shows you an area where I've applied a caramel colored neutral as a layer over the more vibrant color to dull it. The place of greatest contrast is where we are wired to look first. Very tricksey, eh?

Buxtehude Project: Sides

Back to my commission with the Duke Chapel Choir Concert on April 21st. Here's my first painting...a progression from the first layers. The second picture is a close up of the 3 transparent primary colors I use as an underpainting. I am starting with the fourth of the seven paintings called Ad Latus (to the sides) and am several layers in. It is like a puzzle you have to figure out and there are no answers in the back of the book! It is an exciting challenge. It is a little hard for you to see what is happening, but this painting has to do with the wound in the the side of Jesus during the crucifixion. You can read the lyrics at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Membra_Jesu_Nostri. The blue rectangle in the upper left quadrant is taped off with painter's tape to save the white surface. You will see my plans for that at the very end. Stay tuned...

Feb. 15, '13 , Acrylic on Gessobord (1-1/2" birch sides) 12" x 12" Ready-to-Hang

Today begins again with an underpainting of black paint. It started with a "sunburst" of deep yellow in the upper right quadrant with subsequent layers of different greens bursting out from it as if it exploded, building from light to dark. I had no idea where this one would go...my initial intent changed about halfway through the painting. I try to go with what is happening, reacting to how the colors are blending or contrasting. I knew this was going to be something very organic, working with greens...and it eventually lent itself to a landscape of sorts. It was all warm and needed a burst of cool...so an aqua blue made its way to the front of the line. Just a heads up that I made a few changes to yesterday's painting...which you can see on my blog tab at www.RobynSandAnderson.com. I would love to invite you take a look at the other paintings on my site, if you have not had the chance.

Red seemed appropriate for the day, and to be truthful I am quite taken with this color, as my house and its furnishings will attest. I started with an underpainting of black which gives a different feel to the painting. You can see it deepening the second layer of color with shadow and creates contrast when layered colors are wiped away. I want to remind you that color varies somewhat on the computer from the original as everyone's computer shows different tones. Suffice it to say, these are warm reds and very cool blues. Love that contrast! They strengthen each other. I would say with some conviction that the paintings always look better than what you are seeing...so if you like this...you will be pleased with the original.

Buxtehude Commission: Membra Jesu Nostri

Before starting a commission that includes multiple paintings, I determine a color palette. Using the same  pigments throughout the series is a way to create unity and connection. I look for warms and cools of most of the pigments. I can glance at it when trying to figure out what color to use to get the effect I want. I am creating seven paintings inspired by Buxtehude's "Membra Jesu Nostri" for a choral concert. Step one is to listen to this music from the 17th century - all the way through. I let it wash over me. I listen for its tone, movement and color. Even though I don't understand the language, it communicates. Then I read the lyrics, written in the late 11th or early 12th century. And, you guessed it...I listen to the music while reading the lyrics. I make notes of my impressions. I read the conductor's notes on the piece which is most helpful. I use the music multiple times to inspire my initial sketches and when I start painting. I try to figure out design motifs that will also connect the paintings together as one creation. Check back to see the transparent layers of the underpainting, the beginnings of an abstract painting.

Feb. 12, '13 , Acrylic on Gessobord (1-1/2" birch sides) 12" x 12" Ready-to-Hang

In today's painting, I play with an underpainting of primary colors, build transparent layers and then move to some opaque neutrals. The use of opaque neutrals is a nice contrast to the vibrant colors underneath it. It serves to frame the main action and give the eye a place to rest before diving back in. Yesterday I discovered what a mess it is when multiple people buy my painting on Paypal at about the same time. Flattering, yes, but I felt bad telling people that someone beat them to the punch. I believe I have figured out a way to get around that. I have set up a shop on Etsy.com. If all works as I hope today, when you go to the purchase tab you will be able to hit the Etsy widget and it will take you to my shop in Etsy where you can still use Paypal. The beautiful thing is I can sell one item at a time and if it has sold, you will not be able to buy it. Yay!  Life is good (when you figure out social media...) You may have to register to get into Etsy, which is free. This is a marketplace of artists, crafters, and sellers of vintage objects. Pretty cool. May I just say, WOO HOO! I just tested the Etsy widget and it works. It really, really works!

For something completely different...a taste of nature. I enjoy changing things up a little. I love variety and the freedom it affords. Today I was remembering the feeling I have when I walk in a forest of trees, where you are in the dark and shadows and you see the light shining between the trunks and through the leaves. The play of shadows and light on the paths, trunks and leaves create beautiful patterns of light and dark.

Feb. 10, '13 (or Feb. 9 REVISITED), Acrylic on Gessobord
(1-1/2" birch sides) 12" x 12" Ready-to-Hang

Today is my day of rest....if by rest you mean making some changes to yesterday's painting. There were some things about the Feb. 9 painting with which I wasn't satisfied. This happens sometimes. I have been satisfied with the other paintings I have posted so far, but there was something I needed to do to Feb. 9th's painting and it kept nagging
at my mind as I went to sleep last night.
I made some additions and now...now, I am happy with it. So I am reposting it today and the Feb. 9 painting no longer exists. I will remove that one from the purchase page. Today I spent more time listening to Buxtehude's piece (beautiful, by the way...and growing more beautiful as I listen to it multiple times.) I worked on the themes and sketches of the seven paintings (see Feb. 9 post). I will now choose the palette of colors I am going to use. I use a repetition of color, shape and style to tie paintings together into a series based on a certain text or music, or both. Sometimes the design part of this journey is the most difficult...until I start painting and that's a whole new challenge...for I need to somehow portray the meaning and feel of each cantata, yet use the color, design and texture that will tie them together as a family.
I am not nervous, I am excited! (repeat 5x).

This painting is the last in a series of three concentrating on the use of black & white  as a framing technique with 2-3 other colors taking center stage. It has been so valuable to get immediate feedback from people with these daily posts. I normally work in a vacuum (so to speak) in my studio and usually don't have feedback until I have a show or exhibit. I take all of your voices into account. Yes, it is my voice but what is my voice if it doesn't touch others? If a piece of art fell in the forest and no one was there to see it...would anyone notice? Okay, some squirrels, perhaps...but do they truly appreciate what they are seeing? On another note...the last several days I have been listening to 17th century music by Buxtehude, a German Lutheran composer, in preparation to paint seven large paintings to accompany a choral concert at Duke University in North Carolina. This is a collaboration with conductor Dr. Brian Schmidt, a former member of my congregation in New Ulm. The paintings will be scanned and projected on a large screen behind or alongside the choir. The piece is "Membra Jesu Nostri - The Limbs of our Jesus". The full Latin title translates to "The most holy limbs of our suffering Jesus." According to wikipedia, this work is known as the first Lutheran oratorio. The words are attributed to Medieval poet Arnult of Louvain in the 1100's. It is divided into seven parts, each addressed to the different part of Christ's crucified body: feet, knees, hands, side, breast, heart and head. The instrumental accompaniment will be replicas of the original instruments used. All of this paired with my contemporary abstract paintings. I am soaking up the music, listening for color, movement and translation into the visual. The concert is April 21st. Time to jump in!

Feb. 8,'13, Acrylic on Gessobord (1-1/2" birch sides) 12" x 12" Ready-to-Hang

My daughter, Laura, made a great suggestion the other day. "How about doing three days of paintings using the same color palette?" I like the idea and so, here is another painting using the same palette as yesterday. It was challenging to create something related to yesterday's painting, while making it uniquely new. Each layer "speaks" to me, guiding me as to what needs to be done with the new color I am adding. Painting takes both planning ahead and letting go. It's an interesting balance. I usually have an idea of the colors I am going to use, and in what order...but I have to be open to changing that plan as the painting is happening. Like life. Things go much better when you let go of the need to control everything.
Listen and stay open. My mantra....If interested in purchasing, hit the Painting-A-Day Purchase tab.
