Acrylic on Archival Gessobord with 3/4" Birch Sides, 12x12", Ready to hang!

Today a few tweaks to July 18's painting, strengthening contrasts with some dark violet and defining the inner flames a bit more with white. I have been spending some time tweaking several paintings these last few weeks. I often stare at the paintings that I have around the studio. Some are silent, with no needs. Some are begging for a little more of this or that. It's good to make yourself listen sometimes. Being an artist-type, I tend to react, and react immediately rather than listen. It's interesting to watch, I'm sure!! My husband, on the other hand, usually thinks first. What a concept! Today we switched roles a bit. Just for variety and to keep things interesting. Keeping things interesting. That is the challenge, isn't it?!

Acrylic on Gallery Stretched Canvas with 1-3/8" cradle, 12 x 12", Ready to hang!

I have been circling the wagons, so to speak, as I start the new year. Every January, after the craziness of November and December holidays, I take some time to 1) finish up my taxes, 2) take the long view of my goals for the new year and 3) try to assess what has worked and what hasn't. Oh, and I forgot my annual existential anxiety fest. Why am I an artist? Should I continue to be an artist? Do the costs equal the benefits? What is my purpose, anyway? You know the drill. At least the fourth question. With social media possibilities, possible grants to write, juried art shows to enter, possible exhibits to pursue, different avenues of "attack", it is a wonder that I have any time to paint. It is the tough part of trying to make a living creating art. You feel a pull, a call, a drive to create but you have to be a business manager and agent at the same time. Hence, the existential crisis.

I will go back in the studio, I said to myself today. I was feeling a bit low and knew that I always feel better when I paint. I always tell my Pinot & Paint classes that painting is good therapy. Indeed, it is. I took the painting from November 26, 2014 and made some changes, adding a deep, warm green. Green and red are complements, or across from each other on the color wheel. They make each pop! or when mixed, create some lovely neutrals. I've also used a couple of iridescent coppers which have a gentle sheen. I like this warm painting. Feels good. Made me feel good today!
