Acrylic on Canvas 12 x 12"
Painting-A-Day: June 28, 20166/28/2016
Acrylic on Canvas 12 x 12"This painting was inspired by the way light hits the edges of branches during the golden hour of the day, when the sun sits close to the horizon. The vertical pillar of metallic gold reminds me of that hour in late afternoon, when life seems deeper and richer.

Let There Be Light
Acrylic on Gessobord, 16 x 20" Collection Murray & Rhoda Finck"How beautiful it is to do nothing, and then to rest afterward." (Spanish Proverb) Well, I haven't exactly been doing nothing, but I have rested once in a while. It is good to be back after a 6 month hiatus. Time flies. Why is it that that becomes more and more true as we age? Do we just notice the passage of time more because we have less of it or have we finally figured out that our frenetic lives accelerate our perception of the passage of time? Yes. I have too much time to contemplate life, obviously.
Today's painting was a commission for a friend's retirement. The title is the theme and prayer of Murray's life. A good one it is, in light of what is going on in our country and the world. It is easy to feel the heaviness of darkness when you hear and read the news. I like to remember that the squeaky wheel gets all of the attention. There are four other wheels that are working perfectly fine. When I sit in my hot tub at night and stare up at the stars, it is a good to remember that I am not the center of the universe. It gives some relief and also some insight.
I was a keynote speaker last weekend at the Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the ELCA (more about that next week). The theme was "Christian Spirituality and the Arts". I talked about my artistic journey and how I landed in abstract expressionism. For me, it mostly has to do with expressing and wrestling with Mystery. "Truth, wisdom, goodness, beauty, the fragrance of a rose -- all resemble spirituality in that they are intangible, ineffable [indescribable] realities. We may know them, but we can never grasp them with our hands or with our words." -The Spirituality of Imperfection.
"Let There Be Light" expresses that truth, or in my dear friend Rhoda's words, "It touches us in a place that words cannot reach."
