Today I've been working on the painting from two days ago. There were things that were bothering me and once I picked up the paint brush again it wouldn't let me go until I felt satisfied. Sometimes you have to put something away to have clarity. Tuck it away and come back to it. You can see it with a fresh heart and mind. I think our brains keep working at it however. I've learned to trust in that. I will sometimes look at a painting or think about it, at least, before I go to bed at night and tell my mind to keep working on it. But I don't think it really needs my permission. A book was recommended to be recently called "Waking Up Grey: An Exploration of Creative Awakening". We are created in God's image, and so like the Creator, we feel whole and good when we create. It is a book to open up your creativity again, which perhaps was lost after leaving grade school. I am going to explore it. I know that being creative has been a very healing experience for me. I wish the same for you! Check out the comparison of the two paintings below. Can you see the changes I've made?

Today I had magenta on my mind. This is the color I knew I wanted to begin with, not knowing what would come next. Before I started painting, I googled the YouTube video of Beau Biden's funeral (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaRKekOw15o), as I had heard President Obama gave a beautiful tribute to the Vice President's son who dies recently of brain cancer. Not sure when during the funeral the speech began, I just let it play as I prepared to paint. The priest gave  his homily (at the 1:34:20 mark). It was one of the more beautiful and poignant funeral sermons I have ever heard, grounded in reality and full of love and hope. The President spoke at the 2:38.00 mark. Again, a beautiful tribute to a young man of integrity, who had known suffering and hardship at an early age. I am struck by the deep love of this family (his sister and brother spoke at the 3:03:00 mark), a love that was not contained but spread out to others. If you don't know the history, Joe Biden's first wife and baby daughter were killed in a car accident, leaving 4-year Beau, 3-year old Hunter and Joe behind. "Out of suffering, good can come if you look hard enough." Today's painting, reflects the depth and breadth of Love in the midst of brokenness and suffering. If you have a chance to listen to this tribute, it is well worth your time.

Today I try to capture some perspective. Atmospheric perspective, that is. The water molecules in the air create a sense of distance with the lightening and softening of each distant hill. I've always loved this look. It creates a magical effect, doesn't it? Are you ever out driving and you see a magnificent sunset or sunrise, and you want to grab your camera to capture it? Well, if you have ever tried it, it is almost always unsuccessful. It is so difficult to capture the effect of light with a camera, unless you have some crazy lenses and filters. To reproduce it is difficult when the objective camera lens tries to grab it. The closest I can get is to try to paint it. Even that is challenging. This original painting captures the light at the horizon line much better than even this photo of the original does. The orange is more pure and the blues are toned down a bit and move towards a cool gray in the distant hills. How we want to capture beauty and hold on to it! How difficult it is!
